The 240s ...
Ok ! First, I know I ask alot of questions, but it's mainly because I can't focus on one model and then buy one !
But I'm starting to like more and more the Volvo 240 ! What I would like to know, is if it's a good car, for a daily driver, but after some times, I'll start to mod it for performance. Which years are thougher, which engines are better ?! ( Also, I'd prefer to have a manual trans.) I've spotter an old 83 ( I think ) 244 Turbo. With the b21FT. The engine has 125 000km and the body about 415 000 km. The car is from British Colombia and he says that it's nearly rust free, floors are perfect, ect. He is asking 3900 $ ( CDN ) for it. Here is a photo : http://www.lespac.com/picture.php?a=3027942&o=8711772 Or here is the link for the ad ( it's in french... ) http://www.lespac.com/search/detail....ffre=t&etatb=t So what do you think of this car ? Would I be better with another ? Please Help Me !!! Thank's in advance ! Julien. ( And sorry again with all of my questions ! ) |
Also, after reading a little bit about the modifications, I found that they almost all require to have 91 + octane fuel.... but here in Québec, the higher we have is live 91 ..
Could I acheive something good even with this ? Or is it REALLY not recommended ? |
re

$4,000CDN is sure alot for an old volvo. I think you should look harder than that for one. If you are ready to blow that much on an old car, look for a cheap 240 with a messed up engine and get the engine rebuilt. The asperator said he got his engine completely rebuilt for about $2000. If you want a reliable daily driver, try and find an 86+ model, they aren't turbo, and alot of them are manual. A +t swap is pretty easy, or you could drop in an engine from a 940t cheaply too.
|
Yeah I know that it's alot ...
But I went to a Volvo garage , and the guy said that the 240s in Québec are nearly all rusted ... so the 740 and the 940 are probably better... I've found some Volvo 740 16v, but did they ever came with the manual tranny ? And also, the 940s , did they came in manual too ? EDIT : Also, I was searching for a car that I saw some times ago, it's someone with a white Volvo 740, he is posting here or on volvospeed.com or vptuning.com , I can't remember where. He was really low to the ground, and I think it's someone from Ontario or Toronto ! If you can show me photos of his car, I'd like it alot !! Thank'S ! |

Yeah 4000 is alot, BUT 240's are awesome, and if its in top notch shape with a parfect body then it could be well worth it..especially if you look into the cost of bodywork.. 700/900's are ok, but the 900's didn't come with a manual unless they were converted, which can be done. There are a bunch of manual trans 240's and 740's though. I find the 700/900's are just less inspiring to drive, a major part of that could be the lack of manual trans. but at least they are nice and comfy on the highway..
|
Yeah thank's !
That's something I want , to have fun while driving ! In my Altima it's alot boring .... The 240 turbo I was talking about, it is said that the floor is perfect, and that the body has 300 000 or 400 000 km ! It seems alot to me ... But the engine has about 120 000 km ! Would it be a good deal to find a good one, non ruster in the USA and import it here in Québec ? Or find a good one here for a little bit ? Or restore one ? |
The 240 is a great ride. If the one you are looking at is rust free I say go for it. The B21ft is a great motor that you will get tons of miles out of if you do the maintanence.
Mine is driven very hard every time I drive it, and it was driven very hard by all the previous owners with the exception of Mike, and I've got 240K on it and not a problem yet with the motor. There are some 740 16 valve cars out there with manual tranny's but they are hard to find. Mike has one, and I have been looking for one for 3 years. |
whilw you're at it, maybe you can help me convert my buddy: he lives on Edouard Monpetit in Montreal and he drives and Olds :-(
I might stop by sometime in the summer so we can pull a mini-meet? |

Lots of rust free 240 Turbos sell for around $1500 USD or less. |
Thank's all !!
The major problem for importing a car is when the car doesn't have more than 15 years and is not allowed to be driven on our roads ! But the 240 are majorely 15yrs or more ( or near that ) and they are legal to use, so I don't think it could be a problem ... ! Oh and another question I was askign myself , is it really pricey to do the maintenance on these cars ?! Are they good daily drivers ? And with modifications, do they lose they're daily drivability ? |
...
|
Nobody can answer to my question ?
And btw I'm probably going to see the 240 turbo I saw for sale on the net! I'll give you news If I go to see it ! |
They make excellent daily drivers when well-maintained, and are very cheap to maintain. Check out www.fcpgroton.com - you can get a sense of what stuff will cost ya...
|
with a source like this, any volvo is easy to maintain. just come to turbo bricks if anything breaks. we'll help.
i say buy it |
