Volvo's That Run

Catastrophic front control arm bushing failure

After 5+ years of driving this thing after restoration something finally fell off. Well . . . not really fell off but the left front control arm rear bushing decided to tear up. I did all the suspension bushings with a complete package from Rock Auto which provided parts from countries I had never heard from before.

Price was right but not the quality. No sign of other bushing failure at the moment but something to keep an eye on.

Rubber, especially of specific hardness and rigidity can break down. Never know how old, (unless coded) and even then rubber is one of those materials that can be from a quirky batch. Thank goodness 99% of products very good. Used to work at tire factory and watch rubber being compounded. Great chemistry and now that there is more synthetic becoming more like plastics with some hit and miss end products.

Similar engine/trans swap but trans not shifting past 2nd

I know this is an old thread but I have been in the process of restoring a 74 Bronco and have installed the 2000 Explorer 5.0 with 4R70W transmission using this thread as a guide for wiring. Thank you very much for the well documented swap into the Volvo! My issue is during my initial shakedown drive, the transmission initially shifted fine but now will not go past 2nd gear. I get a P0500 code, which is the vehicle speed sensor. I believe this is coming from not using the Explorer rear end, which has a speed sensor in the rear end for the anti-lock brakes. I've checked and even replaced the transmission tail shaft speed sensor, which I believe is used to control the transmission shifting through the ECU. Am I incorrect? Did you have any problems with the functionality of the transmission after installation in the Volvo? Any help would be appreciated.

Mine installed and worked perfectly with just the original harness so I don't have any experience based advice. Like you say, the rear end speed sensor is associated with the ABS system. I think I know that because one failed on a daily driver and the dash brake light came on.

Thanks

Thank you. Based on your experience, I feel pretty confident my problem is not an electronic issue. Must be internal to the trans. Thanks again!
