How separate turbo from manifold?

1986 740 Turbo.

Replacing turbo with a freshly rebuilt substitute.

I removed exhaust manifold with turbo attached, and am having problems removing the four bolts holding the turbo to the manifold.

Currently I am soaking them in PB Blaster, applying it at both ends of the bolts.

But what to do tomorrow if they're still stuck?

I'm tempted to use heat?

Plenty of over night soaking. The use a high quality 12 point socket on a breaker bar. Have some one hold the manifold or clamp in a large vise so you can really turn the bar. You can get away with reusing the lockng plates if the tabs don't break off. If they do then you need new locking plates. I don't know if you can get them anymore. You may need to use some other type of lock on the faster like those locking wedge washers.

Over all though. The best thing to do is trash that old manifold and install the 90+ manifold with the turbo of your choice.

With the early manifold that was used -'89 the turbo is held to the manifold with 4 bolts that come through the back side. Because you can't get to the bolts to tighten them once the manifold is installed the bolts use a 2 piece lock tab to prevent them from coming loose. The lock tabs are still available but the bolts are not.

Thanks.

Any tips / suggestions on how to best remove the locking plates?

I need to figure how to bend the tabs back without destroying the plates if possible.

If not possible then what, do I use a chisel to destroy them and then use new?

I don't know what these pictures were meant to show. It was long ago, but I think this was about putting it back together, with new locks.

Can't say if the locks are too pricey nowadays, but if I could afford them, they weren't that much back when. Looks like they could be re-used if not too rusty?

I used a small screwdriver to get under the edge and bend them up. It's a crapshoot whether the tabs break or not. I usually bought new plates but have reused ones that the tabs didn't break.

Got them off.

I used a flat blade screwdriver prised against to bolt head to pry them out a bit, then gripped the tabs with a vise grip and pulled them outwards to open.

Very easy once I figured it out.
