![]() How do I remove this steering wheel without damaging/breaking it??
I’ve gotten as far as removing the horn pad and top plastic trim to the steering column but I’m finding that getting a thin wall 27mm deep socket on the steering wheel nut is an impossible task without breaking the plastic horn contact piece. 1st photo is the overall view of the piece I need out of my way to access the nut holding the wheel on. 2nd and 3rd photos show how ridiculous the obstacle is to getting a socket and breaker bar on the nut holding the wheel on. Someone please tell me what steps I’m missing, I’m about ready to say **** the old wheel and take a crowbar to it since I’m removing to install an R-Sport wheel anyways. But obviously, I’d prefer not to trash the original.

![]() Looks like you peeled the cover off of the horn pad but didn’t remove the actual horn pad. The black plastic part covering the steering wheel nut needs to come off too (it should have come off with the horn pad cover). Give it a good yank and it will come off.

![]() That piece comes off. It takes a bit of effort to unsnap the 4 retainers, one at each spring/contact.

![]() I’ve got a bad feeling it’s going to break but that definitely seems like the only way. Will update with what happens!

![]() If you have one of those trim removal bone tools, you could pry up on each corner with it and avoid damage.

![]() I've broken and replaced the round clip-things that hold it to the wheel, so if you break something it shouldn't be the end of the world: just a PITA trying to source a replacement, as it often is anymore with old 'bricks going to the crusher.

![]() Update: got the horn mechanism off using a flat end crowbar and it did not break! There was some sort of adhesive residue like a glue that was applied to the round clip-things that hold it to the wheel. I guess factory really didn’t want it going anywhere.
Fortunately I didn’t need a wheel puller to get the wheel off the steering shaft, but I found I’m missing a piece or two for the R-Sport hub so I’ll be driving with vice grips in the meantime ![]() Jk… I’ll be using one of the other Volvos in my fleet until I get the part I ordered from eBay |

![]() Just realized I left this thread without a resolution so?
I was able to put the rubber ?Turbo? horn pad back together with the horn mechanism with nothing damaged. The steering original steering wheel is now in storage. I think the NOS RSport steering wheel kit I acquired had the wrong wheel hub in it, which was the only part that didn?t look new. I ended up going with a Momo hub adapter from Ben at BNE Dynamics and I was finally able to mount the wheel and be its first driver. |

![]() Which hub came with the wheel? There were 3 different hubs for 240.

![]() I?ll snap a couple pics later today. I suspect since the steering wheel has a 1983 date code that the hub either belongs to a different model than my 1984 240 or that the kit was missing some parts because it definitely wouldn?t install correctly and looked incomplete when mounted
