Fuel cell ideas in a 240

Got a tank from the yard today, great condition, I can't find any shops nearby that'll coat the tank for what I can afford, has anyone coated the inside of their tank themselves? Just looking for a good product, gonna get some full cell foam as well to slap in there

I have used the Eastwood company kit before, It's not hard to do. https://www.eastwood.com/gas-tank-sealer-kits-eastwood-gas-tank-sealer.html

Do you have a radiator repair shop near you? They are getting rare but many of them have stayed in business by fixing car and motorcycle tanks.

They have the tanks to dip the part in, get it super clean, and coat the inside. Like I said before, it was cheap at $100.

I primed and painted the outside myself, using a heat gun and scraper to clean the outside. I used 3 cans of spray paint to give it a thick coating. Brush on paint would probably be better.

Yeah one shop here wants like $400 to coat the inside of the tank alone, so we're probabaly looking at a DIY job

Don?t coat it unless it is full of surface rust.
If it has dry residue, drop a length of chain in there and shake it on all sides with a friend.
Rinse twice, dry, and send it.

Tank is in pretty much mint condition, tiny patches of surface rust here and there inside the tank, got skinny arms might be able to sand them but they’re probably fine, the junkyard card was tboned near the trunk and the filler next looks tweaked but I might be able to fix it, nice NOS piece. Tank almost looks too good to be the cars original tank

Any of y’all installed some kind of sump? It would completely eliminate the need for the lift pump and I can still keep my level sender. I’m just trying to think ahead while I have the parts out of the car, “future proofing” if you call it

Factory tanks already have a sump built in. Put a high pressure pump in there and delete the frame pump.
If it's aftermarket, the sump might be shallow compared to factory. 2.5ish vs 4.5"
without pump and sender, how much does it weight? aftermarket is lighter. 16lb vs 22lb.

I?m talking a rear sump welded in the tank so the main pump is fed by a line coming out the bottom edge rather than the top of the tank. The cup in the is definitely shallower than the original. Im gonna weigh both tanks just out of curiosity once I get all the fluid out

Use a Holley hydramat or a cheap fuel surge tank?

Unless you’re drag racing, a welded sump is not what you want to use. It’s also going to be a huge PITA to install, and probably work worse than stock.

I'm in the process of installing a 20gal foam filled fuel cell in my 242. One from Speedway. Mounting inside, but I did cut some of the "kick-up" at the back out so the tank could sit lower. I'll get some pictures later.

If street driving the car I would reconsider the fuel cell to be honest. Don't turn your Volvo into a Pinto if you know what I'm saying.
